The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
