England and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
