A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
